What is it??? A hierarchical network of Bulletin Board Systems that "Echo" message conferences and file distribution areas to each other via a set of communication protocols and methodologies with an international scope.
Both messages and files are sent up the hierarchy from the system of origin, whereupon they are sent down the hierarchy, as appropriate, through a mapped set of networked links. This had originally been done as a store and forward system over land telephone lines via modem. While this original transport system is still viable and still used, the Internet has become the transport method of choice, enabling much more economical transport of much larger amounts of data.
Echomail conferences are moderated topical discussion areas, where messages are posted regarding a specific subject of concern. Similar to the effect of the "mailing list", the Fidonet echomail conferences are much more efficient, in that messages are stored on central systems where they may be read online, or retrieved for offline processing by individual users, rather than having internet message servers sending out countless copies of each message to each user at an email account. There is also some similarity to Usenet News Groups, however, Fidonet, as a moderated organization, has much better content and subject control, and much less header information overhead.
Since Fidonet conferences are "echomail", ie, messages posted here are sent to systems all over the world, we must be careful. Stay on-topic, above all! Avoid local communications messages, like questions about BBS operations to the sysop, or reminders to local users. These messages are meat for the local conferences and are definitely NOT wanted in echomail conferences! Keep messages clean and civil. They are a reflection of MPCUG to the rest of the world.
